A CONSTRUCTION company has been named one of the UK’s top 50 apprentice employers. Widnes-based AB Building and Electrical Ltd was recognised by the Department for Education for its long-standing commitment to training and supporting young talent in the construction and electrical trades.

The business, founded in 2002 by Tony Batterton and Stewart Shaw, has built a strong reputation in the social housing sector and is especially recognised for its electrical testing and compliance work.

David Batterton, who joined the leadership team in 2009, said: “We are really proud to be named in the Top 50 Apprentice Employers in the UK.
“It is a big achievement for our team and shows how much we care about giving young people a great start in their careers.

“When apprentices feel supported, they grow in confidence and skills — and that is good for everyone.”

The company has trained more than 40 apprentices to date, each supported by experienced mentors and a dedicated management team. In addition to this national recognition, AB Building and Electrical Ltd has also been awarded CIOB Contractor Approved status by the Chartered Institute of Building, demonstrating high standards in governance, accountability, quality management and sustainability.

Director Stewart Shaw said: “Getting CIOB Contractor Approved status is a fantastic achievement for AB.
“It shows that we’re serious about doing things properly — not just in the work we do, but in how we run the business.

“It gives our clients and partners confidence that they are working with a company that’s committed to quality and doing the right thing.”

The company’s head office in Widnes is located in the Commercial Hotel, a derelict site it refurbished in 2020–21.

Simon Crewe, Commercial Director, said: “We are seeking to replicate the growth AB has experienced all across the North West within the Halton area.

“Dave and Stewart have both been brought up in Widnes, which is why AB’s head office is based here.

“They are very keen to secure work with local housing associations and the council after providing so many local jobs for the community in Halton for more than 23 years.”
